Milking it

Alternative milks are crowding supermarket sheves, but how do they stack up against good old moo juice ? " All of these product are fortified to contain approximately the same amount of calcium and vitamin D as cow's milk", says dietitian Joy Bauer, author of Food Cures. " But there are differences when it comes to nutritional value and taste "

SOY MILK
Pro: Naturally low in saturated fat " Soy milk is full of healthy compound that may possess cancer-fighting properties " Say Bauer.
Cnm: There is a controversial belief that a compound found in soy can mimic estrogen in the body, upping the risk for some breast cancer. Still. " research shows that whole soy foods, may actually reduce cancer risk " Ckeck the label for " Whole soy bean " and avoid brand that list " Isolated soy protein"

ALMOND MILK
Pro: Less chalky than soy milk, it's a safe option for peoples with dairy and soy allergies.
Con : Flavor tends to vary among brands, And it contains just 1 gram of protein per cup, compared to 8 gram in a cup of cow's milk.

RICE MILK
Pro: It's free of wheat, soy, dairy, and nuts, for the most common food allergens.
Con : Rice milk is low in protein ( just 1 gram per cup ) and high in calories ( 120 per cup, versus 80 in a cup of skim milk )

COCONUT MILK
Pro : It's rich and thick, yet in its unsweetened form has about the same number of calories as skim milk.
Con : The fat content ( 5 grams per cup ) is more like what you'd find in whole milk.
